Threads, mysql, and FreeBSD have been an unsocial group for a while, and
running two processes that access the same tables does seem to slow things
down a lot.  Tracing it might show something of interest to someone, and
I'm happy to do it if it will help.  I wouldn't have a clue what I was
looking at, and couldn't fix it if I did.

I've tried 4.03b, 4.02a, and 3.23.x, all show similar results:(
