Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for. I hadn't read close
enough to appreciate the difference betwen unionfs and nullfs until now.

I've seen them mentioned again in this thread. There apparently is a
"make distribution" target designed to address /etc, but I can't find it
anywhere.
