Yes.

 If I run strace on the process
it just keeps spinning through the library search.
That's the problem that the above command fixes.

I'm still having this problem. I changed the Makefile,

CONFIGURE_ENV=  CPPFLAGS="-I${LOCALBASE}/include" \
                libltdl_cv_sys_dlopen_deplibs=yes \
                LIBS="-L${LOCALBASE}/lib"

I checked the work/gnucash-2.0.2/config.log and the "libltdl_cv_sys_dlopen_deplibs=yes" is in there. I do make install, start gnucash and the same problem occurs.
I am doing something wrong here?

Right or wrong... I do the following and it works.
#!/bin/sh

#
#  Fixes gnucash slooow startups...
#

cd /usr/ports/lang/guile
make deinstall

cd /usr/ports/devel/libltdl15
make deinstall

libltdl_cv_sys_dlopen_deplibs= yes
export libltdl_cv_sys_dlopen_deplibs

cd /usr/ports/devel/libltdl15
make clean
make install clean

cd /usr/ports/lang/guile
make clean
make install clean

###

The above script assumes you have gnucash installed "properly" and are suffering from the slow startups.

HTH.
