Nvidia released version 256.35 of their FreeBSD driver today:

I just compiled the the 64bit version on 8.1-RC1 and watched a few
youtube videos, ran glxgears and played games/nexuiz for a few minutes
w/o any issues.

If you want to test the new driver, just bump PORTVERSION of
x11/nvidia-driver to 256.35 and run "make makesum".

FYI. I just did this and it worked fine with the LINUX option disabled
and the APM option enabled.

Hmmm, maybe that's what I'm doing wrong. I've had some more stability problems since my last post. I have the linux option enabled since I'm using the flash plugin, and all other options disabled. I'll try again with apm and see if that makes a difference.
