put ACER in your list too the notebooks have brain damaged bios...

Some, maybe, but not all of them. I've used at least three different models with FreeBSD. Toshiba notebooks are worse, IME.
http://laptop.bsdgroup.de/freebsd/index.html is very useful.

Likewise with HP printers; some models--usually the "home" models--really aren't good. But their business-class stuff is excellent. Generally, avoid the models that don't speak PCL or PostScript.
