Really? It has worked properly for years; it's only been broken for some months. Besides history works perfectly. Wouldn't any corruption produce some sort of log somewhere?

Never use file locking on NFS. Period. One day it *will* bite you, due to some yet-to-be-discovered bug. In the meantime, feel free to ignore the advice of those who have been there before...
