I could never get mouse work under X with any protocol other than "auto"

/etc/X11/XF86Config: Option "Protocol" "auto"
I use a Genius Netscroll+ here (4.5-STABLE - 4.6-STABLE), and
another (old 3-button) Genius on another 4.5-RELEASE with these
settings.
