He could use this patch for ssh client (heartbeat feature): http://www.sc.isc.tohoku.ac.jp/~hgot/sources/openssh-watchdog.html and set Heartbeat 120 or smth (default dynamic rule timeout is 5 minutes?) The bad thing for me, I'm using ipfw with static rules, but still often get fatal write failure ;) Maybe that's physical link problems...
