Good point. You are probably right. In that case, take a look at the 'Virtual' directive in your XF86Config file (probably /etc/X11/XF86Config). It is located in the Screen subsection of the config file. Basically, X will, by default, give you a virtual desktop with as large a resolution as your monitor will support, unless you specifically tell it to hold itself to a given resolution with the 'Virtual' directive.
