I found this post on the freebsd/sparc64 list - http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-sparc64/2005-May/003120.html - pointing out that the installation might not work with anything else than a serial console connected. So disconnect your keyboard (to prevent graphical mode) and connect to the serial port of your machine.
