You know, it depends. Most of my Seagate drives
are almost silent, but Maxtor and Hitachi (IBM) can
easily be heard.

Nevertheless, I don't take chances - and enable
SMART on all hard drives. Smartmontools come in
handy, I always know when it's time to make a
backup and go buy another drive.
