Yep, vlc gives a bus error too. Looks like we have the same problem!

I've found that installing from ports doesn't always (ever? I'm not
sure) upgrade the dependencies. Could it be a common shared library
used by the three programs?

It probably is. However, I'm not sure how to go about figuring out which one of these dependencies it is, let alone how to fix it. Could you help us troubleshoot this? BTW, I used portmanager to upgrade my ports.
