Yes, as I understand it from the documentation this is depreciated,
anyway, I tried and I get:

photon# iwicontrol iwi0 -d /boot/firmware -m bss
iwicontrol: Can't load firmware to driver: Invalid argument
photon# iwicontrol -i iwi0 -d /boot/firmware -m bss
iwicontrol: Can't load firmware to driver: Invalid argument
