No, you can force a default shell without modifications. Check out login.conf(5) and shell variable. However, the original post implies little FreeBSD experience. Why do you want to automate such a procedure? You said it's going to be for a networking class, that is a limited a number of users, right? sdf is a public access Unix system and has to do this automatically, you don't have to.
