Unless you do make install / deinstall for all your ports in your system and magically know when and which ports to upgrade when the time comes to upgrade them, you're probably using portupdate / portinstall, or one of the ruby based metapackages (portman for instance).

Having less packages on a system in order to keep it up to date is key in many cases, and I believe that perl is a more widely used language than ruby is. That's why I made the comment I made.
