Thanks everyone. The issue seems to be related to IPF, which I am trying to sort out. Basically when ipf is enabled, the connectivity fails, although my pass out rule for ftp includes ports 20 & 21. With ipf -D disabled, no problems. I'll probably post to a new thread after I've tried some more first.
