I've been happy with FBSD on Dell Inspirons, although the newest I've used it on is an 8600 (it's what I'm using now). Some things have been problems (e.g. on the 7500 the sound input never had a driver, on the 8600 it took a while to find a driver that would make a working NDIS driver for the wireless).
In general, if you get something new on the market you are far more likely to have trouble getting it working.
