I've had probably had the same issues with an logitech wheel-mouse (usb):

 Mar 24 23:56:55 harare kernel: ums0: 3 buttons and Z dir.

 The following xorg-section without any rc.conf moosed stuff got it to work:

 Section "InputDevice"
  Identifier  "Mouse1"

 Option "Protocol"    "auto"
  Option "Device"      "/dev/sysmouse"

 Option "Buttons" "5"
  Option "ZAxisMapping"   "4 5"
 EndSection
