k3b will issue a warning about being run as root, but it will certainly run as root.

As the non-root user, in an xterm window, type: xhost localhost
Then su to root and run k3b.

Running as root isn't your problem, but if you want to eliminate permission problems on the burning device(s), you can try it that way.
