What defines ulimit -d's upper limit?

When I try to raise it, it doesn't appear to move:

        # ulimit -d
        524288
        # ulimit -d 1000 ; ulimit -d
        1000
        # ulimit -d 999999999999 ; ulimit -d
        524288
        # ulimit -d unlimited ; ulimit -d
        524288

My system:
        $ uname -a
        FreeBSD chkno.net 4.7-STABLE FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE #0: Sun Nov

        $ grep memory /var/run/dmesg.boot
