How did you invoke it?
There's a big difference between:
cd $HOME && gtar cfz /tmp/xx.tgz . # should get everything
and
cd $HOME && gtar cfz /tmp/xx.tgz * # will miss all the dotfiles
Did you do the latter, by chance?
