Unfortunately, I haven't tried to log in since a package update I did around August 22, so I didn't notice this problem until now. Does anybody have any idea what might be causing this?

It turns out this was a bug introduced in version 272 of xterm which was one of the packages I updated. The maintainer was able to reproduce and fix the bug which will be in version 275 of xterm.
