Ports: Compiled to *your* specs, for *your* machine. Faster/smaller downloads. More options available for customization. Can apply your own patches. Packages: Faster installs. Known configurations, that have been tested by others. Less resources needed on your machine. (Don't need to spend time compiling.) They can work together, in many situations.
