Consider that index making (or "make describe") is CPU & disk
intensive work; 'portsdb -u' and 'pkgdb -F' are nothing in
comparison.

Hardware problems perhaps?

Could very well be, it's a pretty old machine, but I just had a chance to run the Seagate utility on the hard drive and found no problems. Could be flaky memory chips, I suppose. If no one else has been having any more than the usual problems it probably is hardware.
