Joe, Check the blackbox out - compiles fast and loads within 5-7 seconds :-) /usr/ports/x11-wm/blackbox. You will like how easy it is to configure menus there.
KDE is indeed an overbloated application. From binaries, it takes 10-15 minutes to install KDE.
