It's sometimes important to verify whether a process is running by entering ps auxww | grep cups because normal ps output is limited to 80 characters; and in case of cupsd, the command shown by ps may be something like "/usr/local/sbin/cupsd" which may extend beyond column 80. Don't know whether that's the case here, but may be.
