they move the default some where under /usr/local/...?
search for it then put it where you current one is now. it may or may not help, but doble listings for perl does not look good. also I have CPU_TYPE=athlonxp
you could try the same for a speed boost on your system when you get it working.

Also the file /etc/defaults/make.conf does not exist, never did. It is how ever mentioned in handbook.
