Did you do a make kernel KERNCONF=YOURKERNELFILE, too? I'm only asking because you mentioned make world, and while that rebuilds the OS, it doesn't make (or install) the kernel.
I have to ask simple questions; the problem, if not simple, is flat-out weird.
