You probably need the maestro support as well.  
There's a module for it, so you don't need to recompile the kernel to check.
The command
        kldload snd_maestro
returns
        kldload: can't load snd_maestro: File exists
This indicates the file is already loaded?  If so, some other gremlin 
has a clamp on sound output.
