Yes and no.  POP is fine if you only ever check mail from one system.
Otherwise, imap is more appropriate.  Security is a separate issue
altogether when you look at it this way.

Well, you also have to take into consideration where you want your email stored. If you want it on the server, use IMAP, if you want it on your local system (where it's more likely to get blown away), use POP.
