Hi! My stuff is also in /usr/X11R6/include/GL and I use to following line to compile:
gcc -I /usr/X11R6/include/ -L /usr/X11R6/lib -lglut -lGLU -lGL -lXmu -lXext -lX11 -lm file.c Works for all the code examples given on www.opengl.org.
