Hi Vince, I bought the same DVD drive a few weeks ago & it works just fine on my 5.3-RELEASE system. I can watch DVDs, mount a DVD-ROM & I've burnt a DVD-RW successfully. There's nothing special in my kernel except ATAPICAM support. I mount it as a SCSI device, so maybe it's worth trying that on your system?
