network programs are craching the new system: netstat, ping, the qmail tcp server.... all of them... sshd is running but when accessing from outside it panics too... what is it?

Did you "make world" in addition to recompiling the Kernel? Sounds like your system is out of sync.
Here's a note about how I did it a while back:
