Yes, /usr/ports/UPDATING and sometimes in a port's pkg-message file, if one 
exists.  If the port has a maintainer, communicating any surprises to that 
person will hopefully result in better documentation.

Thanks, IMHO this kind of info should be in the pkg-message file, and I shall 
drop the maintainer a line tomorrow to suggest just that.
