I'm running:

And I recently installed a DVD burnerso that I could do system backups:

I know there are "better" backup solutions, but this system is for home use and I just want to get backups going. Eventually (e.g. as soon as I figure out how) I will be doing proper dumps, but for now I'm pouring things off into cd9660 filesystems.
I've been using growfs

to do all this, and for the first disk, it did just fine. The problem is the *second* disk:

When I take the ruined disk out, I can see the physical evidence of a short write, but the disk isn't mountable.
The best part of all is that once I replace the ruined media and rerun growisofs, the new disk burns flawlessly. Just to taunt me.
I am getting this result every single time.
I know very little about SCSI but my theory is that some sort of state is being set on the device but not cleared before the next disk is attempted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I will happily provide further information if you clue me on how to obtain it. Thanks.
