I have the same (or very similar) drive, but mine has firewire capability as well as USB, and I have found the firewire support under freebsd 5.3 to be excellent, certainly much better than usb2. I got it working with USB but only at 1.1 speeds. The generic kernel supports firewire out-of-the-box.
