I don't know what you mean by no menus or borders, but irssi is pretty stripped down and can be run from the console: http://www.irssi.org/ I run it from a screen session all the time and it works well once you get the hang of it. I think you can make it beep when new messages come in but because I run it on a remote server I've never bothered to look into/activate this feature.
