Next to dmseg's output you could do one additional step to isolate the
problem. Take the GENERIC configuration again and only change this:
options SMP
device apic
This makes it simpler of the problem is caused by something else.
Where did you get the sources from?
I have had problems compiling 5.4 with the sources from the installation
CDs until I used CVSup to get them again.
