I don't know what the right magic is, but you are definitely running
into a IRQ problem.  This is the classic symptom.  If I had the
machine, I'd sit down and cycle through the available irqs until I
found a combination that worked.  Likely you'll need to run windows on
the machine, jot down its resource usage, and then try to duplicate it
on FreeBSD.

Before someone else says it, configuring IRQs is a huge pita with
OLDCARD.
