As it turns out, FreeBSD's tar is in fact GNU tar, albeit an older
version.

% tar --version
GNU tar version 1.11.2

If you want to see all the changes in gtar from ports, then:

# cd /usr/ports/archivers/gtar
# make extract
# less work/tar-1.13.25/NEWS
# less work/tar-1.13.25/Changelog
