I've done exactly the same thing on a couple of old PII-400 systems that I have (just going up to ata66, disk-limited) and it made a significant difference. For example, the loader's "spinner" is now a blur. Not very scientific, but it feels a lot faster. I think that the difference between ata33 and ata66 or 100 will be very noticable.
