Possibly cheaper, less power to run, fewer moving parts to fail, no OS to keep updated ... the list is long. I bought a printserver for my laserjet that plugs directly into the parallel port of the printer (no parallel cables needed), powered by a wall wart, speaks lpd (etc), configuration via telnet, for about $7 via ebay.
