I saw problems like this when PAE was crashing my box in the early version of 4.9. I would assume the patches were put into RELENG_4_9, but maybe you want to try RELENG_4 to get -STABLE?
I know this doesn't explain why it is crashing in 4.7 or 4.8 though.
