On the contrary, your suggestions are very helpful, Kamikaze. It still crashed when I erased everything, but I'll try successively adding bits and pieces. It never did have that 'Mode 0666' line, so I'll see if there's a combo that does work. I've never had to really tinker with the X conf file, so this is a "learning experience". :D
