I had "watchdog timeouts" occur on a small network setup, for a:

        ssh remote "cd /usr && tar xf - ports" | tar xvf -

and this resulted in a pretty sparse ports tree on the local drive.
Lots of stuff being dropped. Shifting a single big tar-ball worked
though.
