What version of FreeBSD are you running?

What is the output of:
ls /dev/ad1* 
meddussa# ls /dev/ad1
/dev/ad1        /dev/ads14

Also, what do you get with:
file - < /dev/ad1
meddussa# file - < /dev/ad1
/dev/stdin: x86 boot sector
