We used to use stable/unstable branches, but that was back when there were several active coders. I tend not to develop deep branches, and just work incrementally on the main line, but how you work is up to you. Generally we just try not to break the build or the tests, roughly follow the standard Java coding conventions, and avoid tabs:-). I recommend working on something that interests you. Have fun.
