Some informations here,
https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/TorRelayGuide
>> 2. As a relay, to help the Tor network ?
> Yes.
Ok, so you will have to forward/open ports.
Do your Freedombox behind a router ?
If yes, you will have to forward ports to make it possible to people and
other relays to speak with your relay.

Check the config file /etc/tor/torrc :
- all the relay traffic will use the ORPort, so you will have to forward
it in your router, and open it in your firewall. (not needed if you want
to use it only without being a relay to "help" the Tor network.
- config the log file for debugging : in this torrc file, add : Log
notice file /var/log/tor/log
Restart your Tor service to be sure the daemon is now loading the new
config file ;)
systemctl restart tor

With the new log file, you will be able to check what's happen in real
time : tail -f /var/log/tor/log
"Tor has successfully opened a circuit. Looks like client functionality
is working." is a good info to read, your Tor client is connected to the
Tor network.

I hope it can help a little ;)
