I think the problem is that I have a really old version of multistrap (em_multistrap 0.0.8).
I installed it with apt-get, but I'm on an older version of Ubuntu rather than a recent Debian. I'll figure this out myself, I'm sure freedom-maker is fine, sorry for spamming the list.
