GEOS Ensemble Lite - can you explain in what way it is FreeDOS incompatible?
Kicks out an error message, even if HIMEM/EMM386 not loaded.
Got past this, it was a bad error message from the app contrary to its documentation, about needing SHARE. However Ensemble Lite hard crashes further along. On a file open of MS4.GEO, dos function 3dh, FreeDOS itself pukes all over the registers and stack before returning from the 3dh function. Crash soon follows. Externally duplicating the exact function call sequence outside of Ensemble works fine, so I'm assuming memory corruption within Ensemble (or faint possibility of kernel corruption that Ensemble image+execution uncovers).
And MSD ...: The programs which included the evil "pretend DR DOS is not
compatible" AARD test in Win3.1 were: MN, SETUP, HIMEM, SMARTDRV, MSD and WIN.
MSD is an interesting case. I can break in with the debugger where it goes into an infinite loop checking invalid memory for a zero terminator and if I force it out of that loop, then MSD memory displays do work.
MSD IS an interesting case...of gross misbehavior. Walks the MCB's and tries offset 2Ch (environment segment) of the blocks, scanning to zero terminator of the environment block, apparently even if the MCB is not a program PSP. On my machine, with DOS=UMB, one of the high loaded drivers has a random ROM address at offset 2Ch. Since the ROM doesn't have a zero terminator within that 64K block, MSD goes into an infinite scan loop.
The heck with both of them, I say. I purge them both from my list of problematic programs to check.
Oh yeah, and Lynx works for me up through its error message about not finding a connection, so I've done about as much as can with it, too, unless and until somebody sends a full Internet connecting setup to test.
